Where housing went up in blocks, roofs fail in blocks, and that is useful information rather than bad news.
Built in batches, failing in batches
Hewitt grew as subdivisions rather than one house at a time. Streets were laid out, framed and roofed in a handful of months, and that has a consequence people rarely think about until it happens. The roofs on a street do not fail gradually across twenty years. They get to the same age at the same time and then a run of them go.
This is genuinely useful. If two or three houses near you have had roofs replaced under claims, yours is the same vintage and was under the same storm. It is worth getting somebody to look, and it strengthens rather than weakens the case if you do claim.
It also means you can ask your neighbors what they were quoted and get a comparison that actually means something, which is rarely true in older parts of the county.
Young roofs fail for different reasons
A roof at twelve or fifteen years has not worn out. If it is leaking or shedding shingles, something about how it went on is usually the reason, and there is a short list of usual suspects.
Nails placed too high, above the nailing strip, so the shingle above is held by less than it should be. That produces wind loss in strips rather than randomly. Overdriven nails that have cut into the shingle. Valleys that were cut carelessly. Step flashing at a wall that was face nailed or short. Vent boots that were the cheapest available and have already cracked.
The reason to care about the distinction is that an installation fault rarely occurs once. If somebody finds it at one detail, the same crew almost certainly did it everywhere, which turns a repair decision into a replacement decision.
What the warranties really say
New build owners often assume the roof is covered and are surprised. The manufacturer covers the shingle as a product, usually on a prorated basis that declines each year, and commonly excludes the labor to fit a replacement. It can also be void if the roof was not installed to specification, which is precisely the situation you would be claiming in.
The builder's workmanship cover is much shorter and on a fifteen year old house is long gone.
Neither is a reason to skip looking. It is a reason to know where the paperwork is.
Storm season here
Nothing about Hewitt changes the hail itself. The cells that reach Waco reach here. What changes is the rebuilding afterwards, because when a subdivision is hit, a lot of work is being bid in the same fortnight and the quality of who is available varies enormously.
Reading what real hail damage looks like before the week that matters is worth more than any advice given during it.

- Yes. In a subdivision the roofs are the same age, the same product and often the same crew. If three have been settled as storm damage, yours was under the same cell.
